About The Surrey Inn - Caldwell, Texas
Established in 1962 by Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Alford, Jr., The Surrey Inn has long been a stopping point for travelers. It's located at the intersection of State Highways 21 & 36. Highway 21 at this point follows the route of the historic Old San Antonio Road, or El Camino Real, between East Texas and San Antonio. Highway 21 at this point is part of The Presidential Corridor, the link between the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station and the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin. Highway 36 is the primary artery between Abilene in the north and the port of Galveston in the south.
After it opened, The Surrey was labeled "Alford's Folly" by a Houston Chronicle columnist. He evidently believed that such a fine establishment would never survive in a small town like Caldwell. Although the columnist is likely not with us anymore, The Surrey Inn is alive and well!
